Remembering the 40th Anniversary of the Sabra and Shatila Massacre

Dr. Swee Chai Ang Reflects on Witnessing the Massacre:

Forty years ago, I arrived as a volunteer surgeon with the British Christian Aid team to war-torn Lebanon, ravaged by Israel’s invasion. I was posted to the Palestine Red Crescent Society and worked in its Gaza Hospital in Sabra Shatila. Until then, I had supported Israel and never knew Palestinians existed.

That invasion killed thousands and destroyed homes, livelihoods, hospitals, libraries, factories, schools and offices. It also split 14,000 Palestinian families through the deportation of their beloved husbands and sons, euphemistically called the “evacuation of the PLO” in exchange for a ceasefire.

Nurse Ellen Siegel and Dr. Swee Chai Ang on the Remaining Injustices Surrounding Sabra and Shatila:

Forty years have passed, and many generations later, the painful memories remain. Investigations, interests and questions continue. Israel claimed recently that the archives concerning the communications between the Christian militia blamed for the massacre, the Lebanese authorities and Israel have been lost!

There is still much to learn, and more information needs to come to light. Israel must be held directly responsible for this atrocity. The role and guilt of the U.S. has not yet been fully examined. The failures to allow the voices of the surviving victims of the massacre to be heard and preventing fair investigations to be held continue to obstruct the pursuit of justice.
