Rail Strike Likely Averted, Tentative Agreement Must Be Approved by Workers

National Review: Freight rail companies and union leaders representing tens of thousands of workers have reached a tentative deal to avoid an economically devastating strike, President Biden announced Thursday morning. The deal, which must still be ratified by the workers themselves, was brokered during an all-night negotiating session led by Labor Secretary Marty Walsh. The strike emerged as a possibility after the union leaders demanded workers be given higher wages and more time off to deal with family and medical emergencies. The freight companies have agreed to allow workers to take unpaid days off for medical care. They previously were not allowed sick days. Many of the details of the agreement have not yet been released but the Association of American Railroads, an industry group, claimed that the talks resulted in significant wage bumps for workers (National Review). Daily Wire: A third of U.S. freight is moved by rail, and an interruption could cost the economy up to $2 billion per day (Daily Wire). Ben Shapiro: All it cost was (REDACTED). Literally. The White House has refused to make public any of the details. But you’ll be paying for it (Twitter).

DeSantis Sends Illegals to Martha’s Vineyard

Fox News: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis followed through on his promise to drop off illegal immigrants in progressive states, sending two planes full of migrants to Martha’s Vineyard on Wednesday… The office of Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker responded, saying it was aware of the situation and that the arrivals were provided short-term shelter (Fox News). Dana Loesch: Wealthy Martha’s Vineyard finally has to pay their fair share of what poorer border towns have been forced to deal with for YEARS due to Dems open border policies. Dems talk about sanctuary but get all stingy and look down their noses when illegal entrants enter their enclaves (Twitter). Babylon Bee editor Joel Berry: I’m so happy to hear DeSantis is sending migrants to Martha’s Vineyard. I’m told the people who live there are the wealthiest and most virtuous liberals on earth. They must be so excited to welcome such diversity into their community (Twitter).

Border Encounters at Historic Numbers Even as Democrats Insist Border is Secure

Katie Pavlich: Since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, the White House and administration officials have repeatedly claimed the border is “secure.” They said this as millions of illegal immigrants, with numbers hitting new and historic records month after month, continued to pour into the country — severely overwhelming border communities. Today a bus load of illegal immigrants were dropped off in front of Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence in Washington DC (Townhall). Sharyl Attkisson: A graphic look at the record, out of control numbers in the current border crisis (Twitter). Townhall: Illegal immigrant outside of Kamala Harris’ residence this morning: “It’s open, not closed. The border is open…Everybody believes that the border is open. It’s open because we enter. We come in. Free” (Twitter)!

Supreme Court Rules 5-4 Yeshiva University Must Recognize LGBTQ Campus Group

Fox News: The Supreme Court denied a bid by Yeshiva University to block an LGBTQ+ student organization from forming on campus and is sending the issue back to the New York courts. In a 5-4 ruling against the Jewish university on Wednesday, the Supreme Court denied Yeshiva’s request to put a New York County Supreme Court decision on pause, and the school will now need to go through the New York court system. Supreme Court Justices who dissented from the majority included Justice Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett (Fox News). NBC: The decision leaves intact a decision by a New York state judge, who ruled in June that the university was bound by the New York City Human Rights Law, which bars discrimination based on sexual orientation. The university argues that it is a religious institution and therefore should be exempted from the law. Requiring the school to endorse the group would be a “clear violation” of its First Amendment rights, which protect the free exercise of religion, it said (NBC).

Ohio Judge Blocks Heartbeat Bill From Taking Effect for 14 Days

National Review: A judge on Wednesday temporarily blocked the implementation of Ohio legislation that prohibits abortion after 20 weeks of gestation. The trigger law, signed by Republican governor Mike DeWine in April 2019, was activated after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade over the summer. In the ruling, Hamilton County judge Christian Jenkins granted a 14-day suspension of the law, which was challenged by the ACLU of Ohio and Planned Parenthood on behalf of abortion clinics in the state. The plaintiffs claimed the law infringes upon equal protection rights afforded by the state constitution. As a result of this update, Women’s Med in Kettering, the Dayton area’s sole abortion facility, will put its plans to close on hold and will start performing abortions next week (National Review). KPVI: Under Senate Bill 23, a doctor who conducts an abortion after the fetal heartbeat could face up to a year in prison with a fifth-degree felony. The State Medical Board could also take further disciplinary action, which could include up to $20,000 in fines (KPVI).

Senate Vote on Same-Sex Marriage Delayed Until After Midterms

Just the News: The Senate will delay its vote on same-sex marriage until after the midterms, Wisconsin Democrat Sen. Tammy Baldwin said Thursday. Democrats had planned to hold a vote as soon as Monday on a measure, which attempts to codify same-sex marriage, over apparent concerns the Supreme Court will strike down laws that make such marriages legal. However, it appears after weeks of effort senators championing the measure cannot get 10 Republican votes to reach 60 to get the measure passed (Just the News). NBC: Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Wednesday that the amendment language they were working on would “make it very clear” that the bill wouldn’t “legalize polygamous marriages” or require churches to “perform same sex marriages” (NBC).

Cloud Communications Company Twilio to Use “Anti-Racist/Anti-Oppression Lens” to Pink Slip Workers

CNBC: Twilio will lay off 11% of its workforce as part of a major restructuring plan, according to an SEC filing published Wednesday. Twilio had 7,867 employees as of Dec. 31, 2021. The cloud communications software builder has been striving for profitability in 2023, and the restructuring aims to improve operating margins, create a better selling capacity and reduce operating costs (CNBC). PJ Media: But Twilio is a very woke company, and (CEO) Mr. Lawson couldn’t let the opportunity slip by to show the world just how woke Twilio is. So the firings are going to be done a little differently. “As you all know, we are committed to becoming an Anti-Racist/Anti-Oppression company. Layoffs like this can have a more pronounced impact on marginalized communities, so we were particularly focused on ensuring our layoffs – while a business necessity today – were carried out through an Anti-Racist/Anti-Oppression lens,” Lawson added (PJ Media). Bay Area Inno: Twilio declined to comment on what it meant by conducting layoffs with an anti-racist/anti-oppression lens and whether it meant race was a factor in its layoff decisions. Companies can be sued by employees that believe they were terminated based on race, which is illegal in California and federally, based on the Civil Rights Act (Bay Area Inno).

Putin Warns: US Would Cross “Red Line” by Sending Longer-Range Missiles to Ukraine”

Fox News: Russia on Thursday issued another threat to the U.S., saying it would cross a “red line” if Washington supplied Ukraine with longer-range missiles. Moscow “reserves the right to defend its territory,” Foreign Minister Maria Zakharova said during a briefing, according to Reuters. The U.S. has already provided 16 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to Ukraine, with more on the way. They have a range of roughly 50 miles… Kyiv has argued for months that it needs longer-range missile capabilities, like the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), which has a range of roughly 185 miles, to grapple with its roughly 1,500-mile-long battle front (Fox News). Insider: The US has provided Ukraine with more than $15 billion in military assistance since Biden took office, and more may be on the way. Russia has repeatedly warned the US and its allies to stop sending arms to Ukraine, arguing that it is prolonging the bloody conflict Putin started (Insider).

FBI Agents Accuse Biden of Exaggerating White Supremacist Narrative

Washington Times: Rank-and-file FBI agents are accusing the Biden administration of exaggerating the threat of White supremacists and pressuring agents to cook up domestic terrorist cases involving racist extremists. Current and former FBI agents told The Washington Times that the perceived White supremacist threat is overblown by the administration. They said top bureau officials are pressuring FBI agents to create domestic terrorist cases and tag people as White supremacists to meet internal metrics. “The demand for White supremacy” coming from FBI headquarters “vastly outstrips the supply of White supremacy,” said one agent, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “We have more people assigned to investigate White supremacists than we can actually find.” The agents’ revelations coincide with President Biden’s “United We Stand” summit Thursday at the White House. The summit built upon the administration’s push to root out racially motivated domestic violent extremists, which included the creation of a specialized Justice Department unit to combat domestic terrorism (Washington Times). National Review: During a theatrical summit titled “United We Stand,” themed to suggest that rightwing hate is rampant in the country, Biden said the White House is launching a new strategy to stop domestic terrorism, “prevent people from being mobilized to violence,” and “counter exploitation of the internet” (National Review). Rep. Jim Jordan: Joe Biden’s holding a “United We Stand Summit” today at the White House, at the same time he’s calling half of America “extremists” (Twitter).

CNN’s Don Lemon Moves From Prime Time to Morning Show

Washington Examiner: CNN host Don Lemon will move to mornings later this year, ending his prime-time show Don Lemon Tonight. Lemon will join hosts Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins in debuting a new morning show, replacing current New Day hosts John Berman and Brianna Keilar. The move, announced Thursday, is the network’s biggest programming shake-up since CNN executive Chris Licht took his position in May. Lemon said in a statement that the last eight years have been “an incredible ride” (Washington Examiner). Fox News: Lemon, considered a fan favorite by CNN devotees despite his trouble attracting an audience, has been an outspoken critic of Trump and other conservatives. Last month, CNN canceled Stelter’s “Reliable Sources,” a low-rated media show that regularly attacked non-liberal news outlets. Harwood and longtime CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin have also been pushed out in recent weeks (Fox News).
