Yesterday, I voted in favor of both articles of impeachment.
In the Navy and in Congress, I swore an oath to protect our Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. Donald Trump took that same oath when he became President, but it is clear that he put his own personal and political gain before the interests of our country.
By withholding critical aid from a key ally, the President put our national security at risk. By seeking foreign intervention to damage a political opponent, the President undermined our very democracy.
I am aware that my decision may cost me my seat in Congress -- Trump won this district by more than 3 points. But I did not serve my country for 20 years in uniform to allow our Constitution to be trampled on. We must ensure that no one is above the law.
John, I didn't go to Congress to impeach the President. This is a somber moment for our country, but it was the right thing to do.
Sincerely,
Elaine Luria Congresswoman, VA-02
P.S. Since I called for the President's impeachment, outside Republican groups have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars attacking me. If you would like to support my reelection campaign, please chip in here: [link removed]
