John –
Fox News is comparing Hank’s peaceful protest of the Senate’s inaction on voting rights to the January 6th insurrection.
As you may remember, Hank was arrested by the Capitol Police last year for peacefully demonstrating in favor of voting rights on the Capitol grounds – following the example of his late friend and mentor Congressman John Lewis by getting into good trouble.
But Fox News published an article yesterday comparing Hank’s participation in the peaceful protest to the January 6th attack on our democracy. So we thought we’d compare the two.

Hank’s Arrest - July 22, 2021 |
Insurrection - January 6, 2021 |
Demonstration to protect the voting rights of all Americans |
Riot incited by Trump to undermine the voting rights of all Americans |
Hank peacefully complied with commands from Capitol Police |
Insurrectionists spent hours hitting, macing, and beating Capitol Police |
Activities included chanting and raising awareness of the need to protect voting rights |
Activities included coordinated violence against law enforcement, scaling walls, shattering windows, threatening lawmakers and the Vice President, and desecrating a symbol of our democracy |
Was a part of legitimate political discourse |
Was a violent act that the GOP tried to claim was “legitimate political discourse” |
This shows Republicans’ desperation, John. They’re so obsessed with defending Trump and downplaying the January 6th insurrection, that they’re trying to distract voters by pointing the finger at people like Hank who have non-violently exercised their first amendment rights on behalf of their constituents. We need to push back against these baseless attacks from Fox News and the far right.
