Team,
Today, we wanted to write to you about the 2024 election. We know, we know – we haven’t even made it through 2022 yet. But before you click away, just hear us out.
First, flashback to 2020. Even after it was clear that President Biden had secured the nomination, false claims of election fraud were rampant. These weren’t just conspiracies peddled by fringe groups. In fact, a group of Michigan lawmakers (including Elissa’s opponent) flew to Washington, D.C. to meet with President Trump before the results were certified. And, days before the January 6th insurrection, 10 other members of the Michigan State Senate (again, including Elissa’s opponent) signed a letter asking Congress to investigate claims of election fraud.
Thankfully, the 2020 results were certified by brave government officials across the country, both Democrats and Republicans, who upheld our democratic principles and refused to bend to pressure from those peddling conspiracy and division.
Which leads us to 2022, where many of the states that decided the outcome of 2020 will now have election-deniers on their ballots this November. And once again, Michigan is front and center.
Here in Michigan, the Governor, Attorney General, and Secretary of State are all up for re-election this year – three positions that will be heavily involved in the certification of Michigan’s 2024 election results. All three positions are currently held by Democrats – Gretchen Whitmer, Dana Nessel, and Jocelyn Benson – who have opponents with some alarming views when it comes to the 2020 election.
All members of the U.S. House from Michigan are also up for re-election. We lost a seat in the House when Michigan’s district lines were redrawn last year. So, we are now going from an even 14 seats (divided evenly among Democrats and Republicans) to an odd 13 – where one party will have official control of the Michigan delegation.
Why is this important? Because in 2024, if the electoral college results are inconclusive (like if electors are deadlocked, or there's a tie) – the decision is moved to the House of Representatives. The congressional delegations from each state will then vote as a block to decide which candidate will receive their state's electoral votes. So, it's important that those delegations have a majority that is committed to upholding the results of our democracy.
Ultimately, what we do now – in Michigan and across the country – will determine who certifies the next presidential election. It will determine if we have principled leaders who are willing to uphold America’s democracy. Leaders like Elissa, who is running in the most competitive House race in Michigan, and against a man who has entertained the falsehoods that have turned up the temperature in American politics. So please, consider chipping in today to help reelect someone who will protect our election integrity in 2022, 2024, and beyond. [[link removed]]
