Yesterday the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach Donald Trump.

I took my oath of office holding the Constitution and, during the oath, I swore to uphold it. That meant voting in favor of the two articles of impeachment.

Even back in 1787, the Founding Fathers anticipated threats to our government, including abuse of power by the President. For this reason, the framers included an impeachment process in the Constitution. Checks and balances are essential to protecting our democracy.

As a separate and co-equal branch of government, Congress has the responsibility to uncover a President's wrongdoings and hold him accountable. We found that this President:

1. Abused the power of his office by inviting a foreign government to interfere in a U.S. election. He did this for personal, political gain. This jeopardized national security and betrayed the American people.
2. Obstructed justice and Congress - even defying subpoenas - at every opportunity.

Witnesses in the Intelligence and Judiciary committee hearings, as well as Trump's own words, have made these facts clear.

Each day, I will continue to do what is best for Oregonians and the American people: holding the President accountable for his misdeeds.
