Since day one in office, Alexandria has fought hard to hold Congress to a higher standard.
So today, when a Republican representative from Louisiana disrespected Raya Salter – an energy justice lawyer who serves on the New York State Climate Action Council – as she testified during an Oversight Committee hearing, Alexandria spoke up loud and clear. She said:
“In the four years that I’ve sat on this committee, I have never seen members of Congress – Republican or Democrat – disrespect a witness in the way that I have seen them disrespect you today. I do not care what party they are in, I’ve never seen anything like that […] There’s more than one way to get a point across. Frankly, men who treat women like that in public, I fear how they treat them in private. We can be better than this.”
This is not the first time that Alexandria has spoken up to hold those in power accountable for their actions – and it won’t be the last. Here’s why:
When incidents of violence or disrespect go unaddressed at the highest levels of government, it conveys that everyday actions of elected leaders in the United States of America don’t matter. But they do matter.
This behavior betrays the meaning and importance of the work that happens in the people’s Capitol. And it trickles down to the rest of the country. When this behavior goes unchecked, it says that treating colleagues or other professionals this way at your workplace is acceptable – when it is not.
From fighting to censure Representative Paul Gosar after he tweeted an animated video depicting him killing Alexandria and attacking the President, to holding Representative Ted Yoho accountable for calling Alexandria “a f— b—” on the steps of the Capitol – Alexandria will never shy away from holding her colleagues accountable and demanding a high standard of respect and integrity.
