It’s no secret that Republican-led states like Georgia, Texas, and Louisiana aren’t leading the charge on combating climate change – but did you know that states like these are profiting off of the green energy boom?
According to a report by the Centers for Strategic and International Studies, states that lack the ambition for climate policy are still pursuing the economic opportunities presented by clean energy. Through promises of massive tax breaks and convenient port access, these states are luring companies that manufacture electric vehicles, carbon-capture technology, and solar panels.
The reasoning is simple, John. Despite pushing back against the green wave, Republicans know that clean energy is the future. They understand the writing is on the wall for fossil fuels, so we need to take advantage of this and look for opportunities to find common ground to further climate action.
While these red states may not be taking sufficient action to combat climate change through policy, their role in supplying states that are seeking to reduce emissions with the green technology they need to do so is important. They provide clean-energy companies that produce wind turbines, EV batteries, and other technologies a cheap base to manufacture their products, which in turn benefits states aiming to lower their carbon emissions.
But that’s not enough, John. Trusting in the market alone will not bring about the radical transformation we need to slow down climate change and prevent the worst consequences of it in the future. We need to push these states to adopt real climate policies. This will not only reduce their greenhouse gas emissions but also boost the economic benefits they’re already seeing from the clean energy boom.
