Today is the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, a time for us to remember and honor Hispanic and Latino contributions to our state and the entire U.S.!
Originally just a week of remembrance, we now spend a full 30 days honoring the history and contributions of our Hispanic and Latino community.
In our region, these influences and contributions are easy to see. You can see it in our everyday lives; the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the music we listen to. They have helped build this nation, and our state.
You can also see it in non-obvious ways. You can see the contributions of Yuma-born Cesar Chavez, as workers in Arizona and all over the U.S. band together collectively to unionize and work for better working conditions, pay and benefits.
But we also want to recognize that politically, there’s a lot of progress still to be made.
We’ve made strides in recent years, but too often, our Hispanic and Latino communities are forgotten about. Far too often, they are dehumanized by extremist politicians, like Andy Biggs and Kari Lake right here in Arizona.
So while we celebrate the rich tradition, beautiful culture, and important contributions of Arizona’s Hispanic and Latino communities this month, let’s also commit to continuing to prioritize these communities and fighting back against their mistreatment.
Thank you to our Hispanic and Latino communities for all they do for Arizonans.
