Dear John,

Some Democrats and liberal Republicans in the U.S. Senate are working on a "religious liberty" amendment to the marriage redefinition bill. But this amendment can't truly fix the underlying problem: Enshrining the redefinition of marriage in law harms children, denies reality, and super-charges attacks on Americans who continue to believe that marriage is between one man and one woman.

Your senators are under a lot of pressure and need to hear from you about the harms of this bill!

One of the harms of the (Dis)Respect for Marriage Act that this amendment can't adequately reconcile is that the bill makes ministries and organizations that serve the underserved, including faith-based adoption agencies, even more vulnerable to attacks through frivolous litigation, which they are already enduring. This not only harms the children whom these agencies serve but also the women facing unplanned pregnancies who turn to them for help.

In 2018, I told the story of Kelly Clement in an op-ed for The Hill. Kelly was in college when she found out that she was pregnant. Thankfully, when she decided to put her child up for adoption, she had the right to choose an adoption agency that was best for her and her needs. She chose a Christian adoption agency, where she found patience, kindness, and love. Even with supportive parents, Kelly says her case worker was "the first person that saw and heard me and made me feel like there was light at the end of the tunnel I was trapped in."

Kelly chose this Christian agency because of their shared commitment to her values. "It's not fair to take away birth mothers' right to a faith-based agency because these women don't just have a physical problem. Some of these women are at their weakest moment spiritually." Reducing resources for faith-based agencies or worse, forcing them out of the system altogether, is a disservice to women seeking help.

Kelly's story is a testament to the vital work of faith-based adoption and foster care agencies in supporting not only children, but also expectant mothers in need. These agencies serve individuals in a profound way, by helping women at their most vulnerable and broken and helping children find healing and wholeness in the wake of broken families. The (Dis)Respect for Marriage Act, in contrast, would create a void in children to satisfy the desires of adults.

I hope you will speak up and keep the pressure on your senators to vote "NO" on the (Dis)Respect for Marriage Act, not only for the sake of children, but for their mothers as well.

Sincerely,

Mary Beth Waddell
