Next year, we are setting out to change the course of history by building a mass movement behind the Green New Deal and electing a new set of leaders who are ready to put it into action.
We know that winning a Green New Deal isn’t gonna be easy. But with our lives and futures at stake, we can’t afford to lose.
So to figure out how to win, we’ve been looking to history, studying past movements that have fought for massive changes to our society--and won. Movements like the mass strikes that led to the original New Deal, and the marches, boycotts, and sit-ins of the civil rights movement.

But so far, one thing is clear: History shows us that societal transformation only comes when millions of people take to the streets to demand it. When they do, change is all but guaranteed.
Researchers have studied every major civil resistance campaign worldwide from 1900 to 2006, and they found that no nonviolent movement has ever failed once they get the active and sustained participation of just 3.5% of the population. In the US today, that’s 11 million people.1
Getting 11 million people into this movement won’t be easy. But it is possible--and we are making a plan to do it. That’s why next year, we’re training 100,000 new Sunrise leaders, partnering with organizations around the world to keep building the climate strikes, and expanding our electoral teams to make contact with hundreds of thousands of voters.
If we do this right--and if we have your support to help us go as big as possible--we can build our movement to a level where the research says that we are guaranteed to win a Green New Deal.
