Dear John,

I am writing to you from Islamabad, Pakistan, where I am the Representative with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.

I’m sure you’ve seen images in the news. I’ve recently returned from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where the result of the flooding is devastating. In the past few days and indeed weeks, intense rain, flooding and landslides have damaged and destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes, roads and entire villages. The flooding is triggered by intense monsoon rains and has claimed over 1,100 lives, including 350 children, throughout the country – with the figure rising daily.

As of September 1, the flood disaster has already upended the lives of 33 million people. Pakistanis and Afghan refugees – of whom 1.3 million have been generously hosted in Pakistan for decades – have both been impacted dramatically. People are in desperate need of support.

UNHCR has been assisting those affected by flooding and landslides, alongside our partners and the authorities. So far, UNHCR provided some 1.67 million emergency relief items – Including tents blankets and sleeping mats to support refugees and the host communities affected with the monsoon. But the needs are growing every day.

The situation – and UNHCR’s response – is evolving rapidly. Please, give today and help make a lifesaving difference for survivors and those still in danger.

We are very grateful for your support.
