I’m writing to share some big Advancement Project news: Starting today, our two offices are entering a new and exciting chapter.
For more than 20 years, Advancement Project National Office and Advancement Project California have operated as coequal branches linked by a shared vision of a caring, inclusive, and just democracy. Now, building off our tremendous success and growth, the organization is taking its next evolutionary step with the two offices becoming two distinct organizations: Advancement Project (formerly Advancement Project National Office) and Catalyst California (formerly Advancement Project California).
This separation is a testament to the staying power, organizational strength, and leadership of each office. Founded in 1999 by former NAACP Legal Defense Fund lawyers Penda Hair, Molly Munger, and Constance L. Rice, along with attorney Stephen R. English, both Advancement Project offices have achieved monumental impact in the fight for racial and economic justice. With racial justice issues now front and center in today’s landscape, this is the opportune time for our offices to become two separate, complementary institutions ready to forge a new path in the movement.
The National Office will retain the Advancement Project name and continue to be a national organization working on cutting-edge issues impacting people of color like policing and the criminal legal system, education justice, and voting rights. The new EIN (Tax ID) for the National Office is 87-4702350.
The California office is adopting a new name—Catalyst California—while retaining its mission and vision focused on dismantling racial injustice and redesigning public systems for access and equity in California. Catalyst California will retain the current 501(c)3 designation and EIN (Tax ID): 95-4835230.
We’re excited to continue fulfilling our respective missions and deepening our work to build the world we want to see—join us by learning more about each organization today!
