Teddy Fikre: Virginia’s Uber-Driving, First-Generation Immigrant Congressional Candidate

Alexandria, VA: Meet Teddy Fikre, a most unconventional US Congressional candidate who is working diligently to replace an entrenched incumbent to represent Virginia’s 8th Congressional District. A first-generation immigrant from Ethiopia who sought refuge in America in 1983 fleeing a despotic government that committed a genocide against over 500,000 people in his homeland, Teddy felt compelled to run for Congress after realizing that the very ingredients that gave rise to strife and bloodshed in Ethiopia are beginning to metastasize here in the United States.

Once a loyal partisan who fed into the “us versus them” construct by bashing “the other side”, two years of homelessness taught Teddy the value of our common humanity and convinced him to walk away from identity and ideology-based politics. He is running as an independent for this very reason, in a time where the majority of Americans do not affiliate with either major political party and in a paradigm where Congress’s approval ratings is at an all-time low, Teddy is running for Congress by rejecting tribal politics.

Teddy’s story is compelling on many fronts, not only did he make history by becoming the first Ethiopian-American to qualify for the general elections as a Congressional candidate, his narrative is one that truly represents the everyday hopes and struggles of tens of millions of Americans who have been disenfranchised by a political process that honors money while paying lip service to equity and equality. While his political opponents enjoy the privilege of campaigning full-time without worrying about making ends meet, Teddy starts his morning by driving Uber for a couple of hours before starting his full-time job as an IT Project Manager only to wrap up the day by campaigning in the evening.

As Teddy tells his constituents frequently, he does not have to feel their pain because he lives their reality. Given that the US Congress has become a country club for the rich and uber-privileged, it is imperative to have everyday workers and small business owners represented in DC.
