2022 Latino Heritage Month / Mes de la Herencia Latina 2022
latino heritage month

*Unidad for a Stronger Minnesota*

Two years ago, facing an unprecedented pandemic, our communities were on the front lines as essential workers, tele-working, in confinement, or re-building Latino businesses and our social and cultural fabric. This year feels already a little bit different as Latino Minnesotans across the state are preparing and celebrating lively parades and events honoring Central American, Mexican, and Chilean Independence that combined, serve as the foundation of Hispanic Heritage Month which unites us.

As we know, in September of 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week observed during the week that included Sept. 15 and Sept. 16. In 1989, it was expanded to a monthlong celebration (Sept. 15-Oct. 15). The start date is significant because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.

This month, we stress the importance of unity among Americans of Latino descent in Minnesota and across the country. We also want to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of Minnesotanxs of different walks of life who have kept the economy going and showed so much resilience in supporting their families during these last two challenging years.

We are grateful for your sacrifices and hard work that unites our community with strength, resourcefulness, resilience, and hope. Thank you!

*Keeping our historical memory through the dawn tradition in the Maya highlands*

By Iyaxel Cojti Ren [ [link removed] ]

The ancient Mesoamerican peoples had a historical consciousness that manifested with the development of writing systems, the production of books, and oral tradition where the memory of their first settlements and their ancestors was kept. The Mesoamerican peoples presented their past as a series of suns or sunrises, where each sunrise represented a stage in their historical and cultural development. In the Mayan highlands, each dawn was connected with the taking of new territories, with the consolidation of political alliances, and the construction of their main religious and political buildings. In this presentation, I will talk about how the peoples of the Maya highlands recreated the primordial dawn and its implications in the political, cultural, and religious life of the communities both in ancient times and in the present from an interdisciplinary approach.

MCLA in the community: Summer Community Engagement Centered on Latinx Youth

community engagement

This summer, MCLA hosted in-person visits in Crookston, Owatonna, Brooklyn Center, Saint Paul and Minneapolis. We want to thank our partners and community ambassadors in each one of these locations. Without their help and guidance, these engaging and productive conversations would not have happened.
As in previous years, the purpose was to connect with the community with a focus on Latinx young people, inform the community about the agency?s work, and to learn more about what the main issues are in the state, to help us prioritize legislative actions and prepare our legislative agenda for the next biennium. During these discussions, we also reminded participants about the importance of registering to vote and shared resources [ [link removed] ]to make sure that all eligible Latino(a) citizens make their vote matters.

Watch [ [link removed] ]here a video with welcoming remarks by *Governor Walz*?and talking about the importance of civic engagement.

We are finalizing our report, so stay tuned!
