Our climate and communities cannot afford more oil and gas drilling in our public waters: [link removed]

***********************************************************
Dear Friend,

Disastrous offshore oil spills, like the BP Deepwater Horizon explosion and spill in the Gulf, each began with an offshore federal lease sale. Data proves that new federal leasing won’t lower gas prices — now, or for decades — but it will irreversibly harm our communities and our environment, all while fast-tracking more climate disasters.

Our climate and communities cannot afford more oil and gas drilling in our public waters. That is why we are asking you to join us in telling the Biden administration to finalize its next management plan with no new offshore oil and gas leases.

The Department of the Interior is in the process of finalizing a new Five-Year National Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Leasing Program (“Five-Year Plan”), a document that outlines the size, timing, and location of proposed oil and gas lease sales for the next five years. Part of this process requires the public — like you — to provide input on the future of offshore oil and gas leasing. The Biden administration has a unique and critical opportunity in 2022 to determine the immediate future of offshore leasing. Tell the administration to align the next Five-Year Plan with President Biden’s climate obligations by finalizing a plan with no new offshore leasing.

Advancing a Five-Year Plan with no new offshore leasing would have profound climate and environmental justice benefits, from reducing greenhouse gas pollution rates, to protecting vital ecosystems and the health of affected communities.

The Inflation Reduction Act — the recently passed landmark bill that invests billions to fight climate change — unfortunately also includes harmful language that requires the administration to issue leases for a sale in the Gulf of Mexico that was previously thrown out by a federal judge. It also directs three more previously cancelled lease sales to move forward in the Gulf and Alaska. However, these lease sales can still be challenged in court, and Earthjustice’s litigation on behalf of Gulf communities has resulted in overturning similar auctions to the oil and gas industry in the past.

Our climate and communities can’t wait. You can play your part and weigh in on the future of our planet and our health by urging the Biden administration to not offer any new offshore leases to fossil fuel companies in the next Five-Year Plan.

Sincerely,
Chris Eaton
