When Freedom House was founded 80 years ago, America was in the middle of one of the most tumultuous periods in its history, marked by an unwillingness to confront the horrors in Europe until it was too late for the millions who died in the Holocaust.

This period provides the backdrop for a powerful new documentary from Ken Burns, Lynn Novick, and Sarah Botstein, The US and the Holocaust

, which premieres September 18 on PBS. The film examines the story of the Holocaust from the perspective of America at the time and asks: why was more not done by the United States?

This week, Freedom House President Michael Abramowitz, who advised on the film, reflects on the painful lessons of the Holocaust, and how democratic nations, including ours, risk repeating those mistakes by denying the rights of refugees, ignoring ethnic cleansing and genocide, and not doing enough until it’s too late.

Freedom House Condemns Azerbaijani Attacks on Armenia

Earlier this week, Azerbaijani armed forces launched artillery and drone attacks against targets inside the Republic of Armenia.
