Support a new bill that will allow more people to see their Social Security estimates
Social Security likely will be a main source of retirement income for many of us, so it is imperative that we have a full understanding of our potential benefits when planning how to fund our retirement years.
That’s why Consumer Action has pressed the Social Security Administration (SSA) to resume automatically mailing paper “earnings statements” to working adults. Early in this decade, the agency stopped sending annual paper statements to consumers under age 60 and those who have created an online Social Security account. The decision to stop the mailings has been reversed a few times in this decade, but currently they are mailed only to workers age 60 and older who aren’t receiving Social Security benefits and have not established an online SSA (my Social Security) account.
Because of this, we are pleased to support new bipartisan legislation in Congress that would require SSA to reinstate the mailing of its annual Statement of Earnings to all workers age 25 and older until the wage earner establishes an online SSA account.
Take action today and tell your legislators to support the Know Your Social Security Act (HR 5306 and S 2989)! Paper statements are an essential foundation to our retirement security.
