Friend --
Your People's Alliance PAC met one week ago and endorsed candidates
for Sheriff, Soil and Water Supervisor and decided to endorse all
three referenda on the ballot in November. These endorsements are in
addition to many the members of People's Alliance PAC made at a
meeting in April 2022.
Our full list of endorsed candidates for the 2022 General Election
is below. We will also send tens of thousands of mailers to voters
across the county as early voting begins, and will have our well-known
"green ballots" in the hands of poll workers at one-stop voting and on
Election Day.
Help us get the mailer and the green ballot into the hands of
voters to endure a progressive Durham, North Carolina, and nation!
People’s Alliance PAC Endorses Incumbent Sheriff and Other
Progressive Democrats
(Durham, N.C.) In a virtual
endorsement meeting held by Zoom on September 7 and attended by over
150 people, members of the People’s Alliance PAC met to debate and
make final endorsement decisions for the 2022 General Election. Most
endorsement decisions were made in an earlier meeting prior to the
Primary Election in May.
Members of PA PAC endorsed
incumbent sheriff Clarence Birkhead for the primary; PA PAC members
overwhelmingly chose to also endorse him in the General Election,
where he faces an independent candidate. We support his
transformational work in the Durham Sheriff’s office and look forward
to its continuation in his second term.
PA PAC endorsed candidate Nida
Allam for US Congress in the primary. She lost the primary to NC
Senator Valerie Foushee. At its recent endorsement meeting, PA PAC
chose to endorse Senator Foushee in the race to represent the new
fourth district of NC in Congress.
PA PAC also endorsed David Harris
and Mark Waller, who are running for two available seats on the Durham
Soil and Water Board of Supervisors.
PA PAC is a political action
committee that shares a common vision and membership with the
progressive People’s Alliance in Durham.
Endorsement decisions are made by
the PAC membership at meetings in advance of elections every year. At
the meeting, PAC committees who have studied the candidates make
recommendations, but ultimately the endorsement is decided by a vote
of the members after rigorous debate. During Wednesday’s meeting, any
member of the organization who wished to speak to the qualifications
and policies of a candidate was afforded the opportunity to do so.
Candidates value the PA PAC endorsement and work hard within
transparent PAC rules to make sure their supporters in the
organization attend the meeting. PAC members attend to persuade and be
persuaded.
The PAC’s support of its candidates
only begins with the endorsement. PA PAC campaigns for its candidates
with organizing, events, mailings, social media, canvassing and poll
work. This work is managed by a committee of PAC coordinators elected
by the membership. Members and supporters donate money to support the
PAC campaign and volunteer for poll work and the many other tasks that
are necessary to win elections.
