John,

This week, a bipartisan group of lawmakers in New Jersey voted to
dramatically improve the lives of incarcerated women and primary
caretakers in the state’s prisons and jails. The Dignity for Incarcerated
Primary Caretaker Parents Act passed the Senate and Assembly with a
supermajority of the legislature voting in support!

Our team spent the last two years working alongside Dignity Ambassador
Gale Muhammad of Women Who Never Give Up and other directly impacted
advocates. We traveled to the state capitol to share real-life stories of
how incarceration has negatively impacted families in New Jersey. We
negotiated provisions of the bill to ensure we passed the strongest
possible piece of legislation, as quickly as possible. And we built
bipartisan support with Republicans and Democrats, bringing both parties
together to restore Dignity to Incarcerated Women and ensure children
could keep bonds strong with their parents who were incarcerated.

Our hard work paid off!

Now, important changes are coming to New Jersey correctional facilities.
The Dignity for Primary Caretaker Parents Act means that dignity, empathy,
and compassion will be restored to New Jersey's criminal justice system
by:

* Placing incarcerated parents and caregivers in correctional facilities
as close as possible to a child’s place of residence;
* Prohibiting solitary confinement and the shackling of pregnant
incarcerated women;
* Adding parenting classes, trauma-informed care, and training
corrections officers on how to interact with victims of trauma;
* Opening the doors for formerly Incarcerated people on the outside to
go into facilities to mentor parents and assist them with reentry;
* Provide feminine hygiene products that meet industry and health
standards, at no cost;
* And dramatically increasing oversight and accountability of prisons
and jails statewide.

We’re celebrating a major victory in New Jersey and are excited to keep up
the momentum of our Dignity for Incarcerated Women campaign into 2020.

[ [link removed] ]Will you join us in celebrating this major accomplishment for our
brothers and sisters behind bars?

We won't ever stop fighting to ensure the criminal justice system treats
people with DIGNITY. We are one step closer to meeting our goal of
bringing Dignity to Incarcerated Women legislation to 20 states by the end
of 2020. There’s much more work to be done and we’re proud to be in this
fight with you.

Thank you for all you do,

The team at #cut50
