FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

*Skagit County Preparing for Possible Temporary Solid Waste Facility Closures*

Due to the looming possibility of a railroad strike, Skagit County Solid Waste is preparing for possible temporary facility closures of their transfer stations.

?We have been experiencing disruptions to our rail service with container shortages since January 2022,? says Solid Waste Division Manager Margo Gillaspy. ?Unfortunately, this has led to an excessive buildup of solid waste in our transfer station and previous temporary closures to our public self-haulers.?

Skagit County is working with neighboring counties, Republic Services, Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) to find resolutions for these ongoing problems. ?We appreciate the public?s patience during our closures. I know that the closures derailed plans and cost people time and money,? says Public Works Director Grace Kane.

The possible nationwide railroad strike could affect more than 100,000 railway workers and all industries across the county, including impact to the weekly curbside pick-up of garbage for households and businesses.

Skagit County Solid Waste urges residents to seek reduce, reuse, and recycle options for reusable items. ?We have a great resource on our website, Beyond The Bin [ [link removed] ], which provides a variety of reuse and recycling options for many household items,? says Division Manager Margo Gillaspy.

Beyond the Bin can be accessed at [link removed] [ [link removed] ].

Normal hours of operation for garbage, recycling, appliances drop-off:?Monday through Sunday, 8:30 AM?- 6 PM. The?Household Hazardous Waste Facility [ [link removed] ]?located at the Skagit County Transfer & Recycling Station is open?Monday through Friday, 10 AM?- 4 PM.

Other recycling information can be found at [link removed] [ [link removed] ].

Self-haulers?to the Transfer & Recycling Station should call 360-416-1570 for a message on status of operations prior to heading out.?The?Skagit County website [ [link removed] ]?and County?social media [ [link removed] ]?will also be updated to reflect changes to regular operations status.
