John,

Democrats accomplished a major environmental victory last month by securing the largest-ever federal investment in climate action.

However, this win did not come easily – after weeks of deliberation in the Senate, the final version of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) reflected concessions made to appease a conservative Senator, and it gets worse.

Now, we’ve learned that Senate Leadership will attach a “permitting reform” package (a resulting side deal of IRA negotiations) to a must-pass government funding bill.

This so-called “permitting reform” is a misleading name – it is a policy proposal directly from fossil fuel companies that would accelerate permitting review processes for their dirty energy projects, undermining public health and environmental health protections.

Frontlines communities – primarily low-income and people of color – would be put at risk if this “permitting reform” package is passed. These frontline communities who live near polluting fossil fuel sites will see direct harm to their air quality, water supply, and neighborhood wildlife.

Not to mention the acceleration of the climate crisis at large.

In short, this policy would boost oil and gas company profits at the expense of our environment and marginalized communities.

Effectively, if his unsavory side deal moves forward, it would force members of Congress to choose between protecting our most vulnerable communities or funding the government. That’s unacceptable.

I joined with over 80 of my Democratic colleagues to call on House leadership to keep this harmful side deal out of a critical government funding bill. Now, I need you to join us in demanding action.

Add your name and tell Congress not to sacrifice our communities and environment for corporate fossil fuel profits.

Thank you for taking action on this important issue.

Jared
