Team, right before Labor Day, the Biden Justice Department filed its response to petitioners in Fitisemanu V. United States, a case that asks the Supreme Court to answer the question on “whether the Insular Cases should be overruled” or not.
As you all may know, this century old decision by the Supreme Court established a racist and colonial framework that continues to deny 3.6 million Americans residing in U.S. territories equal constitutional rights.
While I am tremendously disappointed to see the Biden Justice Department in its response continue defending the racist and colonial Insular Cases, I remain hopeful that the Supreme Court will not shirk away from reckoning with how its decisions in these cases contradict America’s most foundational principles.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, our country cannot continue to deny hardworking, tax-paying Americans the same rights and benefits that Americans born in the states enjoy.
The ongoing denial of equal rights is simply wrong.
I remain committed to the people of the Virgin Islands and will always fight for the constitutional rights that so many before me have fought for. I am proud to continue this fight and ensure Virgin Islanders are treated equally. Can you chip in today to support my efforts in condemning the Insular Cases and join me in speaking up for all Virgin Islanders?
