JOHN,
We can still stop Joe Manchin’s Dirty Deal that sells out frontline communities and our planet. But we must stay united.
Democratic congressional leadership made an outrageous side deal with Senator Joe Manchin to give away even more to the fossil fuel industry and gut important environmental protections, at the expense of primarily Black, brown, Indigenous, and low-wealth communities.
Over 650 frontline community organizations called this dirty deal a “fossil fuel wish list,” demanding that Congress “stand with the communities bearing the brunt of fossil fuel harms” and reject Manchin's Dirty Deal.
I’ve joined over a third of the Democratic Caucus in the House who have signed onto a letter to remove Manchin’s proposed legislation from an upcoming must-pass spending bill. I’m proud to join Rep. Raúl Grijalva, who authored this letter and who has been a crucial partner in the work for environmental justice, and a broad coalition of Democrats who have signed to show our opposition to this Dirty Deal.
Pitch in today to keep the pressure on Democratic leadership to reject Joe Manchin’s Dirty Deal and protect our planet and our frontline communities.
Having grown up in Detroit by the Marathon Oil Refinery and other corporate polluters, I know what it’s like to be a frontline community treated as a dumping ground.
That’s why, before I was elected to Congress, I took on the Koch brothers for dumping industrial waste in my district, and won. Since being elected to Congress, I’ve continued to fight for environmental justice, recently holding a congressional field hearing in my district to hear from courageous residents and advocates who are fighting back against environmental racism.
We cannot allow frontline communities to be sacrificed in the name of corporate greed. Instead of letting the fossil fuel industry write our laws, we must center the people bearing the brunt of the climate and pollution crises. Manchin’s Dirty Deal would silence communities, rushing through polluting projects before families who live near them even know what’s going on. We need MORE public review and accountability, not less.
I agree with what over 650 grassroots groups wrote: “Tethering this legislation to any must-pass legislation including a Continuing Resolution to fund the federal government is morally abhorrent.” We must reject Manchin’s Dirty Deal, no matter what form it takes.
