December 2019
------------------------------------------------------------
Merry Christmas!
I’m now back as your Member of Parliament and back in Westminster. This week we have had the re-election of our new Speaker, the Queen’s Speech and the Second Reading of the Withdrawal Agreement Bill. The manifesto was clear that we would pass the EU Withdrawal Agreement by the end of January 2020. This will be delivered as we have a deal in place with the EU and the majority in Parliament to pass it. The challenge will be to secure a new relationship and trade deal by the end of 2020, but the EU will hopefully work to a more rapid timetable because of this majority in Parliament who will pass it.
There is much to do. With so many MPs elected for my party in the North, the challenge for the MPs in Sussex will be to use our combined voices to get the funding and reform which we need down here to protect our services and invest in better infrastructure. I will be using mine on your behalf.
As I said in my acceptance speech, I will work with anyone, from any political party, who wants to make a positive difference to our community. I made this clear in my acceptance speech which is transcribed below:
Thanking all at the Count
First of all, thank you to the Returning Officer and all of your staff over the day for everything that you’ve done to make this election go so smoothly. I know that many have not slept for what seems like a couple of days. We know how it feels. But thank you again for a professional, amazing job from you all. And can I also thank the police as well for looking after us as they’ve done through the campaign. I want to say a big big thank you to all of the candidates, and I speak on behalf of us all for Christine, Johnathan and I, it’s the third time we’ve been back together, as it were. Martin, first one for you. We have always, as candidates, in the three elections I’ve fought tried to work together to show respect to each other, so we focus on the policy differences, and I think that what we do is in the finest traditions of the Bexhill and Battle constituency. We do not do the nasty, divisive politics. We respect each other because we’re all going through the same journey and I just want
to ask everyone in the room to give you three a big round of applause.
Thank you so much to my Conservative team for everything you’ve done. You have been out in all weathers, as with all the candidate teams. It’s been a difficult time to hold an election as the weather has taught us, but you’ve been there for me and I’m so so grateful for everything you’ve done. It does make a difference. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
And I also want to say a big thank you to my team that run the office of Huw Merriman, Member of Parliament. My team, who are not party-political, they are here to serve the community so brilliantly and I wouldn’t be able to do my job without Frances, without Penny, without Craig, without Iona and without Gozde. We’re a small team, but we cover thousands of cases each year and we’re here to help you.
And that is the message I want to leave you with. I don’t want to talk about the national picture, its obviously been an eventful evening and will continue in that way. But for me being a Member of Parliament for Bexhill and Battle constituency is the most extraordinary privilege. We have the most amazing and rich tapestry of community where people look out for each other, they care for one another. We have to fight for our community organisations. Things are tough out there for many people. And as a Member of Parliament, now the election is over, I am not interested in the party politics, I am not interested in people wanting to argue and be divisive. I want to work together with anybody in this community that wants to make things better for the Bexhill and Battle constituency. And that is my commitment on being returned – that I will do my absolute upmost to help those that need their MP the most. So thank you again to everyone who has shown their support to me, I promise and pledge that
I will not let you down, I will work tirelessly with my team to do everything I can to make this the most beautiful and wonderful place to live and work. Thank you very much indeed.
