2022 OCA-UPS Gold Mountain Scholars
OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates announced the 2022 recipients for the annual Gold Mountain Scholarship program on August 29, continuing a longstanding commitment with the UPS Foundation to support AAPI first generation students attending institutions of higher learning.
The OCA-UPS Gold Mountain Scholarship program was created to honor a time when Asian immigrants saw America as a mountain of golden opportunity, and to honor our awardees who also seek to fulfill their dreams of a higher education. Since 1999, UPS has generously funded the program and provided this opportunity in partnership with OCA to hundreds of AAPI students for over twenty years.

POLICY CORNER
Show Support for Affirmative Action on Your Campus!
The Supreme Court is considering lawsuits against Harvard and UNC this fall, which may decide the fate of race-conscious admissions in the United States. We need your help in mobilizing your local college campuses by organizing activities in support of affirmative action before SCOTUS oral arguments begin October 31st. Activities can include social media campaigns, teach-ins, rallies, marches, a week of action, etc.
Leading the effort in defending affirmative action is a coalition of national civil rights organizations (African American Policy Forum; Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC; Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law; and NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund). They are also looking for core student leaders who are willing to meet with student leaders from other campuses and develop campus mobilization events together. Core student leaders meet weekly to coordinate amongst each other, and members of the national civil rights coalition will be providing critical support, guidance, and resources necessary to put on these events. ** Please fill out this form ASAP ([link removed])
if you would like to be a core leader.

CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT

OCA-Westchester and Hudson Valley
Robert S. Chao (1948 – 2022)
We are deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved past president Bob Chao, who suffered a stroke while attending the OCA National Convention in Las Vegas to receive the Unsung Hero Award. Bob joined the Westchester Chapter of OCA in 1991, and later served as the Chapter President in 1996 and 1997. During his tenure on the OCA National board, Bob was instrumental in bringing IBM back to the OCA Business Advisory Council, and received the OCA National Asian Pacific American Corporate Achievement Award in 2003 for his dedication and contribution to the company and AAPI community. From organizing volunteers at Food Pantry to delivering speeches at rallies against racism and hate crimes, Bob has been our community liaison and represented OCA in numerous events. For his substantial contribution and commitment to the betterment of the community, Bob was presented a Commendation Award from the New York State Senate in 2021.
To honor and celebrate the inspiring life of Bob, a memorial service will be held at the New Castle Community Center (10 Senter St, Chappaqua, NY) at 1 pm on Saturday, September 24.
Live streaming of the memorial service will be provided on ** Zoom ([link removed])
for remote participants.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made ** online ([link removed])
to the OCA Robert S. Chao Memorial Award Endowment Fund.
A dedicated OCA member for more than three decades, Bob not only demonstrated his lifelong commitment to social justice, but also served as a role model for all of us. He has been our advocacy champion and will always be remembered as our hero.
OCA-Sacramento
On September 8, 2022, OCA Sacramento attended the inaugural Autumn Moon Dinner hosted by Asian Resources Inc. (ARI) to celebrate the trailblazing work of our community members. We are proud to announce that our very own Nancy Woo, Darrel Woo, Joyce Eng, and Alex Eng received ARI's Trailblazer Award. OCA Sacramento board members and members danced the Electric Slide in an impromptu dance challenge that included ARI staff and members of the Elk Grove City Council. Asian Resources Inc. has been a long-time community partner, and we are thrilled to support their most recent effort.
OCA-Las Vegas
In September, OCA Las Vegas wrapped up its annual Mentorship Program, where students and young professionals take part in leadership workshops and are paired up with mentors in order to develop and learn valuable insights related to career, service, and event life skills. The mentees, who were honored during last month's OCA National Convention, will be placed within OCA Las Vegas' various boards so they can continue to represent our organization and make a long-lasting impact on our community and especially future generations to come.
OCA-Detroit
On August 28th, 2022, the Teen Volunteer Council (TVC) of the ACA held a 5K Culture Course at Hines Park.
The event started with opening remarks from ACA president Elinor Ho and TVC presidents Ingrid Huang and Nicole Zhong. After the 5K and scavenger hunt, prizes were handed out to the runners with the top 3 times. Yet every participant received refreshments and goodie bags.
Around 70 people attended this event. They appreciated that 100 people donated to this TVC fundraiser, and TVC eventually raised $1,855 in total.
All proceeds would directly help the TVC fund future projects for the upcoming year, including putting on cultural performances at senior homes for Lunar New Year, donating winter gear to homeless students in Detroit, educating younger generations on AAPI cultures, and much more.

OCA-Greater Seattle
OCA-Greater Seattle's event at the University of Washington's Odegaard Undergraduate Library on September 6, "Bruce Lee Ascending," debuted with much media coverage and was featured on Seattle Times.

The chapter also had members speaking to the Mayor of Seattle about the proposal to build a light rail station in the Chinatown International District, which would disrupt businesses and shutter parts of the neighborhood.
Additionally, OCA-Greater Seattle is a part of the opposition coalition group protesting King County's plans to build a new homeless center in the Chinatown International District - particularly when: a) area leaders were not consulted; b) our County liaison was not aware of the plan; and 3) we felt that the County was taking advantage of our immigrant community and our generous hearts when it came to the homelessness crisis.
OCA-Wisconsin
It was great for OCA Wisconsin to participate in the 2022 Milwaukee Dragon Festival after a 2 years hiatus due to covid cancellations. It was fun to have this tradition back in Milwaukee, uniting the community and its surrounding neighbors and friends.
