Congressional Republicans just let the cat out of the bag.

For years and years, right-wing extremists said that they only wanted to overturn Roe v. Wade so they could leave abortion rights up to the states to decide.

But that clearly isn’t far enough for the most extreme of the extreme, because Republicans in Congress have now introduced a bill for a national abortion ban — meaning no safe havens anywhere in America.

Here’s what one Republican senator said in a press conference this week: “If we take back the House and the Senate, I can assure you we’ll have a vote on our bill. If the Democrats are in charge, I don’t know if we’ll ever have a vote on our bill.”

Well, we just got our marching orders: Protect and expand our Democratic majorities to stop this latest assault on our freedom.

If Democrats hold onto the House and pick up two seats in the Senate, we can secure abortion rights across the country as early as January — overturning all the extreme, dangerous bans that far-right lawmakers have enacted at the state level.

Mandela Barnes and John Fetterman are running to flip two U.S. Senate seats in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and they’d vote to end the filibuster so we can codify Roe into federal law. Every day, it becomes more clear: If Republicans take back power in Washington, they’ll ban abortion nationwide.

The choice in these midterm elections couldn’t be more clear — and the outcome depends on the actions we all take between now and November 8.

By electing champions of reproductive freedom up and down the ballot and expanding our Democratic majorities in Congress, we can show that the arch-conservative Supreme Court doesn’t get the last word here.
