AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) fall foliage spokesperson Gale Ross has announced the start of foliage season. The 2022 Maine Fall Foliage Report issued for Wednesday, September 14, 2022, reports little color change throughout most of the state and predicts a colorful foliage season.
“I like to remind folks that color change depends on the weather as we advance into fall,” said Ross. “Fall foliage conditions reports will be sent out each Wednesday through October 19, or until the last leaf drops!”
In preparation for this first foliage report for 2022, forest health and color change spotters in northern Maine reported less than ten percent color change, with very low leaf drop. According to Aaron Bergdahl, DACF Maine Forest Service Forest Pathologist, “While some may have perceived fall coloration to be developing a bit earlier than usual in some areas and in some tree species due to the late summer dry period, peak color should develop normally from north to south.”
Typically, northern Maine (zones 6 and 7) reach peak conditions the last week of September into the first week of October. The rest of the state’s color progression starts occurring from north to south in mid-October. Coastal Maine typically reaches peak conditions in mid-to-late October.

A fall favorite in Maine’s Lakes and Mountains region, Bethel Harvestfest takes place this Saturday on the town common, with an apple pie contest, artists and craft vendors, live music, kids’ activities, and pony rides.

Mid-September is the start of pick-your-own apples at Maine’s many orchards. In addition to the family-friendly activity, some orchards offer extra fun for the kids and adults, hard cider, and other local agricultural products. Check Real Maine for nearby orchards and offerings.

For those not quite ready for fall, especially classic car lovers, head to the beach for one of New England’s largest car shows— the annual Old Orchard Beach Car Show is this Friday or Saturday.

For those interested in a fall road trip or touring the state as foliage transitions from northern to southern Maine throughout the season, the first region to spot the changing leaves is throughout Aroostook County.
