I am so excited to introduce Norma Cazares, first generation San Diegan raised in Logan Heights and Southeast San Diego, Alliance San Diego Board Director, and first Madrina (Godmother) of ASD’s Quinceañera. Her direction and support over the years have been unmatched. She serves on the committee that helped shape our Quinceañera, a celebration honoring 15 years of building an inclusive democracy in San Diego and beyond. Norma is an active member of the Movement and is excited to celebrate this milestone with us.

We asked Norma to share her thoughts on the importance of Padrinos, a centuries-old tradition in the Latinx culture, and what it means to her. Here’s what she said:

"The term "Godfather" conjures up different images for different people. From a top mafia boss in certain countries to a guardian angel, as in Mexican culture. Godfather translates to Padrino and the female version is Madrina. Padrinos/Madrinas are important in baptisms, quinceañeras, weddings, and other special occasions. They are like guardian angels that commit to looking out for one's welfare, to provide advice and support...which often includes financial support.

I am proud to be a Madrina for Alliance San Diego not only for the 15th year celebration, its Quinceañera, but for the past seven years that I have been on the Board of Directors, where I joined other like-minded supporters. Happy Anniversary Alliance San Diego!" -Norma Cazares
