Flip the South
DFA created our Flip the South Initiative because we believe that the Democrats can be successful in southern states but fail due to a lack of early and consistent financial investment, inadequate voter engagement, and educating a sleeping New American Majority electorate as persuasion versus simply a base guaranteed vote. Our program aggressively focuses on progressive candidates in races across the South at every level of government.
Mail our Way to the Midterms
Political research has shown that positive, personal messages mailed from voters to voters can increase voter turnout. Writing postcards is a creative and fun way to make a difference in the upcoming election and mobilize not only voters but also engage the people close to you to help write postcards too! Studies have even shown that postcards can sometimes be just as effective at turning out voters as canvassing or phone banking. We also know this works because DFA has been doing postcards since we were founded in 2004. It is part of what we were built on and is fundamental to grassroots voter mobilization. Our goal is to reach 200,000 voters with postcards by the November Midterms.
Text-Out-The-Vote
In the fall of 2021 DFA ran a TOTV campaign, targeting 75,000 unlikely voters in Pennsylvania. Out of that list, just over 25,000 people cast a ballot. Lori Dumas, who ran for Commonwealth Court Judge, won her race with just over a 21,000 vote margin. Our TOTV program helped get our endorsed candidate across the finish line. We will be running the same Text-Out-The-Vote program for the 2022 Midterms but this time we will be targeting the voters our volunteers have mailed postcards to in our Flip the South States, further increasing the likelihood of them turning out to vote in November.
Establish Justice
Ending brutality and rooting out systemic racism are the defining human rights issues of our time. Yet pessimists, even among democrats, want us to turn down, and obediently sit on our hands. As progressives, we know that historic changes require courage, commitment, and capacity. Members of Democracy for America have all three. And that's why we're throwing our backs behind our Establish Justice initiative.
Save the Senate and Hold the House
We've selected the best and brightest progressive candidates for endorsement, with more to come as primary season heats up. Each of these candidates meets the DFA bar for unapologetically progressive leadership. DFA embeds with candidates to provide direct, customized campaign support that fulfills the specific needs of each individual campaign.
50 State Strategy
Our 50 State Strategy will always be the cornerstone of our electoral work; we believe that if you fight everywhere, you can win anywhere. As we continue to lead in this work, we must have overlapping strategies, which we refer to as a “layer cake” strategy, that fit within our 50 state (plus D.C.) map. Our Purple to Blue, Flip the South and Establish Justice programs allow us to hyper-focus, as we continue to build a strong foundation for our 50-State Strategy.
Purple to Blue
Our program is a multi-cycle program that focuses on flipping legislative chambers and winning statewide races in conservative strongholds, where Democrats rarely invest energy or resources. In 2021, Republicans passed thirty-three voter suppression laws across 19 states, in addition to openly attacking women's reproductive rights. It is our firm belief that if you want to have more success flipping congressional and statewide seats, you must invest heavily in recruiting and supporting down-ballot candidates. Through this program, we build our progressive bench while also working to ensure that progressives control state legislatures, where they can defend our democracy. DFA's Purple to Blue states for the 2022 cycle includes: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin.
