Jack, this week, Senate Republicans introduced a national 15-week abortion ban.

Democrats control Congress and have been clear that this attack on our reproductive freedom will not pass this session. Still, this is part of the Republican Party's authoritarian push to control our bodies and must be taken as the threat it is.

Sen. Lindsey Graham’s newly introduced abortion ban—the “Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act”—falls far short of Roe’s standard.

The bill name, and the pitiful exceptions in the legislation, are by design. “Late-term" abortion is an arbitrary, political term that forced birth extremists use to manipulate us. It is not an actual medical concept. In reality, the majority of abortions that occur later in pregnancy are because there are serious fetal anomalies, many that are incompatible with life. These conditions are usually discovered past 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Moreover, Graham’s inclusion of “Pain-Capable Unborn Children” in the title of the bill is a lie. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, “The science conclusively establishes that a human fetus does not have the capacity to experience pain until after at least 24–25 weeks.”

Republicans are attempting to sanitize their extremist views to avoid voter backlash in November. But this legislation makes it clear that any vote for a Republican at any level of government is a vote to ban abortion.
