Friend --

When the sixth Democratic debate takes place tonight in Los Angeles, it’s
sadly unlikely that we’ll hear much substantive discussion of the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict or the US-Israel relationship.

Through almost twenty hours of debates so far, moderators have yet to ask
a single question about the issues that matter so much to our movement.
That’s why, at J Street, we’ve stepped in to create the vital conversation
that’s been missing.

At our national conference, we heard from ten presidential candidates --
five in person and five via video messages -- on their plans to undo the
damage wrought by the Trump administration, take steps to push back
against the occupation and help secure a better future for Israelis and
Palestinians.

We kicked off a major, in-depth discussion about American leadership in
the Middle East -- and the world took notice. “It’s a new era for how
Democratic candidates talk about Israel,” HuffPost declared. “2020
Democrats at J Street Conference Reflect New Tone on US-Israel Relations,”
read one New York Times headline.

Creating this public debate is a key step along the way to our ultimate
goal -- empowering the next president of the United States to carry out a
progressive, diplomacy-first foreign policy and help resolve the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict. And we need your help to set the agenda on
this in 2020.

The days when leading presidential candidates refused to speak openly and
honestly about settlements and occupation are over -- thanks in large part
to all the work our movement has put in over the past decade.

But it’s still going to take an intensive effort over the next year to
ensure that the ideas discussed onstage at our conference are reflected in
the 2020 Democratic platform, are adopted by the party’s nominee turn into
real action after we help defeat Trump next November.
