Thank you for celebrating forward with us
Last Thursday, September 8, we hosted Celebrate Forward, a night to honor the contributions of outgoing President Maria De La Cruz, Vice President of Culture and Partnerships Allison Johnson Heist, and Vice President of Finance and Operations Julie Remmelts.
Thank you to all of the community members who joined us to celebrate the work of Maria, Allison, and Julie and look towards the future of Headwaters together!
Our heartfelt thanks go to Camille Cyprian, Headwaters’ current board chair, and Elianne Farhat, a former board chair, who guided our gratitude for the evening.
During her remarks, Elianne shared, “Over the past eight years, Maria, Allison, and Julie have been dedicated to making Headwaters an organization that lives its values of advancing equity, transforming power, and trusting in community. As a leadership team and as individuals, they have led the organization to its current strong position. They are leaving Headwaters built to not just weather change, but to become stronger and even more impactful.”
Headwaters’ vibrant staff of 13, plus our dedicated board members and volunteers, alongside our donor communities continue to grow and show up for our grantees and movements for justice in Minnesota.
We are excited to look towards the next chapter of Headwaters with you!

Celebrating the 2022 Black Seed Fund Grantees
We are proud to celebrate this year's Black Seed Fund grantees and grantmakers. The Black Seed Fund supports Black-led organizations whose work amplifies the political, cultural, and economic power of Black communities.
The fund, stewarded and co-designed by a group of 8 Black community organizers in the Black Seed Network, invested $550,000 in Black-led organizing throughout Minnesota. With this investment, Headwaters will provide 17 organizations with two-year, flexible general operating grants ranging from $20,000-$50,000.
These organizations are leading work throughout Minnesota that advances Black liberation through creating access to Black land stewardship; community-led safety and care; reparative and just public policy; and increasing political power for working class, formerly institutionalized, disabled, and LGBTQ+ Black Minnesotans.

September Community Events
Through Our Eyes Festival
September 14 – September 18, 2022 at 7 p.m.
Exposed Brick Theatre presents the Through Our Eyes festival, featuring the world premiere of two plays commissioned in 2020, Freeing Assata and A Love Story in 8 Scenes; along with a variety of workshops and events celebrating the power of storytelling! Both shows are performed on the same evening.
Ribbon Skirt Workshop with Andrea Rosebear and Devon Northbird
Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 10 a.m.
This workshop will focus on making creative ribbon skirts with lace and other decorative designs. If you are already working on a jingle dress, you may bring it to continue working on it, but we aren't providing supplies for new jingle dresses at this particular workshop, just ribbon skirt supplies.
Boundaries Building Workshop Virtual Workshop
Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at 6 p.m.
Join us to discuss how establishing healthy boundaries for ourselves and respecting others’ boundaries help maintain one’s own well-being. It takes self-awareness to create relationships that work with friends, partners, family members, and co-workers. Understanding your boundaries and what you need to protect your inner peace is the key to self-awareness. Establishing healthy boundaries may also help you become more grounded. Whether our relationships are with a friend, romantic partner, roommate, or professional, it’s important to set boundaries that ensure respect for one’s identity and protect one’s wellbeing. Communicating boundaries is the foundation of a healthy relationship.
This workshop will be primarily focused on boundaries within Deaf Communities.
Queer People of Faith Happy Hour
Thursday, September 22, 2022 at 5 p.m.
OutFront is excited to debut our Queer People of Faith Happy Hour! The Happy Hour is a social time for queer clergy and their allies to get together — many for the first time. There will be both alcoholic and alcohol-free beverages to choose from so everyone feels welcome.
Join us as we build a faith coalition of progressive clergy from different faith communities.
Coming Home to Swede Hollow
Friday, September 23, 2022 at 6 p.m.
Join us to dedicate new signs that interpret the place that indigenous and immigrant relatives called home. Gather at “Swede Henge” mound inside the park entrance at Drewry Tunnel, Beaumont Street. Parking available at Hope Community Academy and St. Paul Brewing Co.
This event is held in partnership with Friends of Swede Hollow, Lower Phalen Creek Project, Dayton’s Bluff Community Council, Payne-Phalen Community Council, and Saint Paul Parks and Recreation.
You Know, Sex - Event with Cory!
Monday, September 26, 2022 at 7 p.m.
Join us as we kick off this fall semester ‘Parents are Sexuality Educators’ workshop series with our fabulous guest, Cory Silverbeg, the author of the book, You Know, Sex! Cory will do a short reading from their newest book along with FTC staff, Heath Focken and Bee Gehman.
After the reading, they will equip participants with practical tools, techniques, and fun discussion to support healthy conversation about sexuality between young people and trusted adults.
Indigenous Lactation Course
Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at 8 a.m.
The Indigenous Lactation training was created by Camie Jae Goldhammer, MSW, LICSW, IBCLC (Sisseton-Wahpeton). Camie and Kimberly Moore-Salas, IBCLC (Diné) are the instructors. This training is unique in that it centers how to support Indigenous families and provides health care providers with ways to serve Indigenous lactating families.
Painting with Earth Pigments on Brain Tanned Hide
Tuesday, Oct 4, 2022 at 4 p.m.
During this workshop, you will learn how to use antler tools to paint on brain-tanned hides with earth pigments and fish eggs. Please do not register for this class unless you can commit to all three evenings. Our class will start on Tues Oct 4th and continue for three evenings.
