Dear Reader,

One benefit of being a Hechinger member is that each February members get to help us decide on a reporting project.

This year members told us they wanted to learn how teachers, students and school leaders are grappling with the threats of climate change. We published two stories – one on teaching climate change in a politically charged environment, another on school leaders’ inaction on global warming – that proved so compelling that we’re now at work on a big project covering climate change and education.

The rise in extreme weather events linked to climate change pose a threat to education in all sorts of ways, from causing missed learning time to destroying school infrastructure and stressing students’ mental health. And, perhaps not surprisingly, research suggests that black and brown children living in the warm (and warming) Southern states may be most affected.

Support from readers like you gives us the ability to tell important stories like these that may not yet be on the radar of big funders.

Join us today and weigh in on what we’ll pursue next.
