HRH Queen Elizabeth II

London Councils Chair, Cllr Georgia Gould, and Vice Chairs, Cllr Teresa O'Neill OBE, Cllr Ruth Dombey OBE and Deputy Chris Hayward, issued a joint statement on the death of Her Majesty the Queen as follows:

“On behalf of London local government, we express our sincere condolences upon the passing of Her Majesty the Queen.

"Queen Elizabeth II lived a life of exceptional and devoted public service. She was a constant and reassuring symbol of stability and unity through good and difficult times.

“In the coming days, boroughs and the City of London Corporation will be supporting our local communities and visitors as they pay tribute to her extraordinary life and legacy.

“London local government will be remembering and reflecting on our city’s enduring relationship with Her Majesty the Queen throughout her 70-year reign.”

Ceremonial arrangements

The Royal Ceremonial Funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be held on Monday 19 September in Westminster Abbey. The day of the funeral will be a bank holiday.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has provided information for people wishing to attend the Lying-in-State at the Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament), which will open to the public at 5pm today (Wednesday 14 September). It will then be open 24 hours a day until it closes at 6.30am on Monday 19 September.

National moment of reflection

The public have been invited to take part in a ( [link removed] )National Moment of Reflection ( [link removed] ) ( [link removed] ) to mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and reflect on her life and legacy.

The National Moment of Reflection will take place at 8pm on Sunday 18 September, the night before the State Funeral, and be marked by a one-minute silence.

Travel in London

Transport for London have provided advice for people travelling to and within London during the period of mourning and ceremonial events. ( [link removed] )You can find all the latest advice and information here. ( [link removed] ) ( [link removed] )

A number of ( [link removed] )road closures ( [link removed] ) ( [link removed] ), particularly in Westminster, are in place and people are urged to avoid driving in central London if at all possible.  

While London Tube services will be running as normal, there may be bus service disruptions and alterations. 

People travelling to and around London during the period of mourning are advised to plan ahead, check the latest travel information and allow more time for their journeys.

Party Conference events

The Liberal Democrats have cancelled their autumn party conference, which was due to take place in Brighton between 17-20 September, during the period of mourning.

The Labour and Conservative party conferences, due to begin on 25 September and 2 October respectively, are currently expected to go ahead.
