Just last month Mary Peltola shocked the country when she defeated Sarah Palin in a special election in Alaska's at-large Congressional district.

Today, she officially became the first Alaska Native to serve in the House and the first Democrat to represent Alaska in the House since 1972. But in November, Mary is going to have to defend her seat against Sarah Palin once again, and she needs our help.

Mary was born in Alaska and raised on the Kuskokwim River in Kwethluk, Tuntutuliak, Platinum, and Bethel. In her youth, she learned the meaning of hard work by helping out her dad in his commercial fishing business and just how important Alaska's natural resources are to their way of life. Later, she went on to serve her state in the state legislature for ten years, and became known for having an excellent track record of delivering for her constituents.

Now, she's running to defend her recently won seat as Alaska's lone representative on a platform that is unapologetically pro-choice. I have no doubt that Mary is going to accomplish a lot in the next few months, but we have to make sure she has the opportunity to continue the momentum well after the midterms.

The Cook Political Report just switched her race's designation from "leans Republican" to "toss-up," the stakes have never been higher.
