** Zapatista Radio: Broadcasting for Autonomy and Self-determination

As part of their self-determination process, Zapatista communities have developed a communication project that informs people in their entire territory in the mountainous and autonomous zones in Chiapas, Mexico. ** Kashmir Under Threat

112 days. That is how long it has been since the government of India stripped Kashmir of its autonomy by revoking Articles 370 and 35A. 112 days of silence from the region, since India imposed a communications blackout that still has not been lifted. 112 days since 8 million Kashmiris have been cut off from the rest of the world by the “largest democracy on earth.” Read more. ** Mauna Kea: Standing Strong and Holding the Line

The University of Hawai’i Board of Regents has, as of November 6, 2019, approved new rules regarding Mauna Kea, the sacred volcano on which construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope, or TMT, was set to begin almost four months ago. In the words of Quechua activist Tarcila Rivera Zea, “building the Thirty Meter Telescope goes against the territorial, cultural and spiritual rights of the Indigenous Peoples of Hawaii.” Read more. ** Colombia Under Review for Violence Against Indigenous Peoples while Protests Rage at Home

Beginning on November 21, 2019, at least 250,000 Colombians have flooded the streets in three separate general strikes, sparked by rumors of cuts to minimum wage for young people. Since then, the strikes have ballooned to decry a wide range of issues including corruption in the public university system, a lack of government action to stop the wave of violence against Indigenous human rights and environmental defenders, of which more than 100 have been killed since Duque took office, and President Duque’s failure to effectively implement the 2016 Peace Deal. ** Going Beyond the International Year of Indigenous Languages

December 17, 2019, was the official close of the United Nations’ International Year of Indigenous Languages, which aims to draw attention to language loss and the need to strengthen and revitalize them. Although Indigenous Peoples make up more than 5 percent of the world's population, they speak more than 4,000 of the world's 7,000 languages. UNESCO predicts that between 50-90 percent of Indigenous languages (~3,000 languages) will disappear by the end of this century if action is not taken. Read more. ([link removed])

Cat Monzón (K’iche’) was born in Guatemala. She studied film and TV production. From 2014 to 2019, she worked as an outdoor experiential educator, facilitating trips for young adults from Canada, U.S., and abroad to Guatemala, Belize, Bolivia, and Peru. She has also served as an interpreter/translator for different organizations such as Timmy Global Health, Curamericas Global, Encuentro de Ancianas y Ancianos sabios del Mundo and other cultural, educational and scientific events.
