The Willow Project comment period is now closed, and 30,000 Earthjustice supporters showed up to tell the Bureau of Land Management that the Western Arctic is not for drilling. Despite our efforts, there are more threats to the Western Arctic on the horizon. |

Dear Friend, |
On August 29, the Bureau of Land Management closed its comment period for the Willow Project — the disastrous drilling plan that could generate as much carbon as 66 coal plants emit in a year, jeopardize the health and traditional practices of nearby Alaska Native communities, and devastate local wildlife like polar bears, migratory birds, and caribou. 30,000 Earthjustice supporters called on the agency to stop the project before it inflicts untold harm in the Western Arctic. |
Willow isn’t the only project threatening the Western Arctic. An Australian oil company, 88 Energy, is pursuing a drilling project in the Western Arctic and claims to have discovered 1.6 billion barrels of oil. The project, known as Peregrine, is in the early stages of exploration, but if this exploration project leads to a development plan and consumption of produced oil, it could dwarf the already-massive Willow Project both in terms of oil production and carbon emissions. Burning the estimated amount of oil could produce 645 million metric tons of CO2 — equal to the emissions from 173 coal-fired power plants operating for a year and more than double what the Willow Project would produce. |
We’re not going to let the oil industry do any more damage to the Arctic, which is why we filed a lawsuit against the Bureau of Land Management last month for failing to consider the carbon impact of Peregrine. The Bureau made the same mistake when it originally greenlit the Willow Project, and we’re going to hold it accountable again for Peregrine. |
We’ll make sure to update you if there’s news about Willow or Peregrine. In the meantime, we could use your help to advocate for the Arctic Refuge, which still lacks permanent protections. We had hoped that the Inflation Reduction Act would protect the Refuge from drilling, but that did not pan out — so we need your help to push the Biden administration to get the job done. |
