Friend, for over 20 years, I delivered the weather and climate change information to the people of Northwest Illinois.
As a meteorologist, you never know exactly who you're talking to, but I was always aware that I was speaking to people of all political persuasions -- and the feedback I received reflected that. Liberals, conservatives, and independents all shared how they appreciated my energy, accuracy (let me tell you, if I was wrong, I heard about it!), and scientific way of talking about climate change. I had a similar experience on the campaign trail that I wanted to share with you.
I was in Kewanee, IL (a town about 45 minutes southeast of the Quad Cities) I found myself talking with a nice gentleman. He noticed that my clipboard said “Democrat” on it -- to which he responded “Oh no thanks, I’m a Republican”.
I asked what he did and he said he was a farmer. I responded, “Well I’m the meteorologist who thinks we need to be talking about climate change and I know you understand that, you deal with it every day!” He agreed and we talked about the need for action. Not “drop everything and totally upend the way our society works" action, but tangible, gradual steps towards a greener, more sustainable future. Just before he signed my petition he shook his head and said, “I can’t believe I found a Democrat who makes sense!”
Frankly, this is why I’m running for Congress here in IL-17. We deserve a representative who is trusted by the voters -- someone known by the community and has the ability to speak to folks of all political persuasions. Our current congresswoman Cheri Bustos showed us that, and I’ve been doing it here for two decades.
