John, I don’t need to tell you that Washington is badly broken. We see it every day.

It’s full of too many career politicians who are there for their own gain and would rather hobnob with lobbyists at fancy restaurants and enjoy luxury trips sponsored by corporate interest groups than put the needs of constituents first.

While politicians in Washington are living it up, families back home are paying the price. There’s a reason Congress won’t cap insulin copays at $35 a month for working families, crack down on price-gouging corporations to protect Missourians who are just trying to fill up their tanks with gas, or take real action to invest in affordable housing to help working families get by. And it’s got a lot to do with the nearly $4 billion that was spent lobbying Congress last year alone.

We all know that Washington is broken – and we've all had enough.

That's why I am releasing a government ethics plan to clean up Washington and make sure that our leaders report to the families they serve – no one else. Here's my plan:

* I’ll work hard to pass laws that prevent members of Congress from becoming lobbyists after they leave office, to stop corporate PACs from buying our elections, and to ban foreign corporations and governments from hiring lobbyists to sway lawmakers’ votes.

* I'll publish my calendar publicly so Missourians can see exactly who I’m meeting with – and who I’m not meeting with.

* I’ll work to ban members of Congress and their spouses from trading stocks and ban congressional family members from being paid by lobbying firms.

* And I'll work to make sure that special interest groups can't pay for lawmakers to go on fancy trips that are often little more than luxury vacations.

I'm really excited about this plan, but overcoming the powerful, deep-pocketed forces against these reforms won't be easy – and I won't be able to do it alone. That's why I've launched a grassroots petition to show Washington insiders the powerful, broad support for change. We've set a goal to reach 10,000 signatures before midnight tonight, so please: Will you add your name now?

I’m running against Eric Schmitt, a career politician who, if elected, will fit right into Washington's broken system. He has already gleefully accepted more than $10,000 in gifts from lobbyists – everything from golf trips to sports tickets to Christmas hams.

Eric Schmitt has made it clear: His vote can be bought, just name your price. That's not how our government should work and it's time we change that.

When I get to Washington, I’ll put Missourians first every time. I'll be nobody’s senator but yours. And by passing this plan, we’ll make sure the rest of Congress can say the same.

Big change like this doesn't happen overnight. It takes powerful, united grassroots movements to win the real reform families need. So please, will you add your name in support of my plan to help me build the public pressure campaign that it'll take to pass this legislation? I need another 2,583 signatures before 11:59 p.m. tonight to hit my goal, so I'm really counting on your name to get across the finish line.
