More great ways to connect, as we get ready for Hispanic Heritage Month, Bi+ Awareness Week, and work to drum up support for the Respect for Marriage Act with our U.S. Senators!

Resources for Latino/a/x LGBTQ+ people and the people who love them

As we get ready to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15-October 15, we're happy to share some hopefully helpful resources.
  • PFLAG publications. All PFLAG publications are available in both English and Spanish, and can be downloaded for free--or hard copies ordered-- at pflag.org/publications
  • Las Familias de PFLAG en Espanol. This lovely short film, created by our longtime partner filmmaker Nick Oceano, shares the stories of the families who come together for PFLAG en Espanol meetings in Los Angeles. Watch it on YouTube, and share it widely!
  • PFLAG Connects: Communities. This program of PFLAG National provides a safe, moderated, virtual space for people of common experiences to come together for support and conversation. To learn more about our space for Latino families, visit pflag.org/connects/communities/latino
  • Se hacen puentes al andar. Created by our friends at NC State University, this is a culturally responsive resource informed by research on Latina/x/o youth's experiences of belonging within a familial context. Its aim is to create what lesbian poet Gloria Anzaldúa referred to as puentes (Spanish for bridges) of solidarity, connection, and understanding between Latina/x/o LGBTQ+ youth and their families. This wonderful resource is available in both English and Spanish.

Three Steps to Being a Better Ally to People Who are Bi+

Bisexual+ Awareness Week (BiWeek) starts on Friday! Here are a few ways to be a better ally to people who are Bisexual+.

  1. Learn: Learn about Bisexual+ Awareness Week and some ways to pay attention to the week. Spend some time browsing through the resources available on the Bisexual Resource Center, Bisexual Organizing Project, and Bi.org websites to learn more about the bi+ community and better equip yourself to dispel common myths about people who identify as bisexual+.
  2. Watch: Check out two PFLAG Academy Online sessions focused on the Bisexual+ community: Bisexuality+ 101: Understanding & Supporting People Who Are Bisexual+ and Advanced Bi+ Allyship: Going Beyond The “Bi”nary. Be sure to take a look through our Something To Talk About Live! series for any episodes focused on the Bisexual+ community.
  3. Share: Use social media to share information and resources about Celebrate Bisexuality Day (September 23) and be sure to follow Bi+ organizations like the Bisexual Resource Center and Still Bisexual.

Advocacy

Join a Phone Bank for the Respect for Marriage Act

The US House has voted strongly to support the Respect for Marriage Act which would repeal DOMA and codify the federal protections conferred by the Loving, Windsor and Obergefell rulings.

The next stop is the Senate! Our opposition is out-calling us significantly, which means Senators in every state are hearing anti-LGBTQ+ messages; we need to meet and surpass these calls and ensure that Senators are hearing from pro-equality constituents.

Sign up now to join a phone bank, and let's get calling in support of marriage equality!

Queerbaiting, Rainbow Washing, Or Bi+ Erasure? Let’s Discuss!

Bisexual+ erasure is a pervasive problem in which the existence or legitimacy of bisexuality (either in regard to an individual or as an identity) is questioned or denied outright. As we head into Bisexuality Awareness Week (September 16-23) and Celebrate Bisexuality Day (September 23) it is important to consider the ways that queer coding, queerbaiting, and rainbow washing (and accusations of all three) in media can feel a lot like bi+ erasure.

Join us this Thursday, September 15 at 4:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM PT for Something to Talk About Live where we will be discussing “Harry Styles Walks a Fine Line,” which appeared in the New York Times by Anna Marks. We're excited to welcome Raina Deerwater, Entertainment Research and Analysis Manager at GLAAD Media InstituteMackenzie Harte, Learning and Inclusion Coordinator here at PFLAG National, and Nicole Kristal, President and Executive Director at Still Bisexual.

Join us on Thursday, September 1st at 4:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM PT on Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, or Twitter.

To learn more--and to check out our discussion questions in advance--visit pflagnation.al/STTALive-091522.
