"Listen to Us: The Unique Experience of Women with Severe Mental Illness" Thursday, September 15, at 1:00 p.m. EDT, Treatment Advocacy Center will host a virtual conversation on the findings of its forthcoming report, “Listen to Us: The Unique Experience of Women with Severe Mental Illness,” which examines the intersection of womanhood and severe mental illness. The report will be released Thursday ahead of the discussion. Women with severe mental illness face unique experiences and obstacles compared to men with the same illnesses and women without schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression. While some research examines how women are disproportionately impacted, there is a lack of research that listens to the experiences of women themselves. The Office of Research and Public Affairs conducted focus groups to hear directly from women with severe mental illness about their unique experiences, perspectives, and challenges. The conversation will be moderated by Samantha Delman, Treatment Advocacy Center's communications associate, and registration is available here. Joining Delman as panelists will be: Rebecca Phillips, a published author from Topeka, Kansas living with severe mental illness who shares her story as a part of the local NAMI Family support group annually, has been filmed in a national documentary about schizophrenia and has been to cities nationwide to share the hopes and struggles of her life. Elizabeth Sinclair Hancq, Treatment Advocacy Center's director of research and co-author of “Listen to Us: The Unique Experience of Women with Severe Mental Illness.” Brooke Gentry, Treatment Advocacy Center's AOT implementation coordinator and a family member of a sibling with a severe mental illness diagnosis, speaking personally to the complexities of sisterhood, and the differences in experience between the parent-child relationship and sibling relationship present in families impacted by SMI. We hope you will join us this week and encourage you to submit questions to Director of Research Elizabeth Sinclair Hancq for consideration at [email protected]. Panelists will answer selected questions during the question and answer portion of the webinar. Don't forget to register here!
