Congress successfully passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which included the largest investment in renewable energy this country has seen. However, this deal came as a result of concessions that will further jeopardize the health and well being of frontline communities who are most vulnerable to climate injustice.

The Inflation Reduction Act was negotiated by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin – a fossil fuel proponent who steadfastly opposed the climate legislation and stalled progress for months and months. In order to get Manchin on board, a dirty side deal was made to appease Manchin.

If passed, this dirty deal would directly threaten the frontline communities, primarily low-income and people of color, who live adjacent to polluting fossil fuel infrastructure – harming their neighborhoods, polluting their air and water supply, endangering wildlife, and accelerating the climate crisis.

Democrats don’t owe Manchin anything after he spent upwards of a year dragging his feet on crucial climate action and common sense policies for the people. Congress is set to bring the destructive dirty deal up for a vote in September. They cannot let it pass.
