The Senate is steadily making progress to confirm federal judges after the August recess. On Monday, September 12, senators are expected to hold a final vote on Judge Salvador Mendoza, President Biden’s nominee for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Judge Mendoza (PDF) is exceptionally qualified to take on this new role. He has served as a federal judge on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington since 2014 and previously served in numerous local judicial roles. His many years of experience on the bench will be an asset to the Ninth Circuit.

Judge Mendoza is keenly focused on equal justice for all both on and off the bench. He has dedicated his legal career to ensuring people can afford counsel—in fact, half of his caseload in private practice was pro bono on behalf of clients who could not otherwise afford an attorney. While on the federal bench, Judge Mendoza has continued working to secure civil rights, including ruling in favor of farmworkers’ labor rights.

Judge Mendoza also exemplifies President Biden’s commitment to nominate judges who will bring representation to their communities. He was the first Latino judge ever to serve on the Eastern District of Washington and would be the first Latino judge from Washington to serve on the Ninth Circuit.

The Ninth Circuit (Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Washington) is the largest appellate district and is home to nearly 21 million Latinx people. Confirming Judge Mendoza will be a big step forward to ensuring everyone sees themselves reflected in our courts.
