Climate change is already wrecking agriculture as we know it, and American farmers are struggling to adapt. Thankfully, SEEC members are stepping in.
Let's talk about food, John.
This summer has been a rough one for American farmers. It’s been a growing season decimated by drought and extreme weather, resulting in the lowest annual yield since 1963.
With fewer crops surviving out in the field, we can expect prices to rise on grocery store shelves thanks to supply shortages. This year's poor yield will affect everything from the produce aisle to the butcher counter and even the pasta sauce aisle.
Additionally, the California megadrought has reached a tipping point for agricultural water supply. Ordinarily, the federal government contracts out its supplies from dams and reservoirs to local water agencies. But this year, there was no water to hand out to farmers. This lack of water will create a domino effect for California’s agriculture for years to come.
Climate change is already wrecking agriculture as we know it, and American farmers are struggling to adapt. Thankfully, SEEC members are stepping in. Their Climate and Agriculture Task Force is focused on ensuring the next Farm Bill provides farmers with the resources they need to address the climate crisis.
But here’s the deal, John: One of the task force’s chairs is Rep. Kim Schrier (WA-08). Rep. Schrier never shies away from the most important climate fights facing our country, and has been a powerful advocate for farmers and the environment on the SEEC Climate and Agriculture Task Force. But Rep. Kim Schrier is one of our most at-risk SEEC Members in November. We cannot lose one of SEEC’s most valuable members when our farmers are struggling.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
