Thousands more have died in the years since from 9/11 related illnesses due to toxic exposure. This is a day of great sorrow for our nation and especially for New Yorkers who lost so many friends, family members, and neighbors. But it is also a day to remember the resilience of this nation. Andrew will be spending the day in NY-02 remembering and honoring the fallen and hopes that you will join him in keeping 9/11 families in your throughts and prayers today. ANDREW IN THE NEWS A health care program for 9/11 survivors and first responders is running short of money, say members of Congress " With the anniversary of 9/11 looming, so is something else — a need for money for survivors of the attack on New York's World Trade Center. On Capitol Hill, Republicans and Democrats are scrambling to address an impending $3 billion funding deficit for a federal health care program that pays for the ongoing medical care of 9/11 survivors and first responders. If the funding shortfall is not addressed, the program will not be able to accommodate any new members starting October 2024, according to a letter from Rep. Andrew Garbarino of New York and 11 other GOP House members to the Democratic chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee. “If Congress does not quickly address this impending crisis, then the men and women who put their lives on the line and who survived the 9/11 terrorist attacks will lose health coverage to treat the physical and mental illnesses that they sustained on that fateful day,” reads the Sept. 8 letter to Rep. Frank Pallone of New Jersey. " Read the full article here. WHAT'S NEW IN NY-02 Remembering Long Island's Heroes On September 11, 2001 Long Island lost 33 first responders to the horror and devastation of the terrorist attacks. Today, we remember and honor them and their brave sacrifice. Andrew started his day at the Town of Islip 9/11 Memorial Ceremony, thanking first reponders for their service and honoring the fallen on this, the 21st Anniversary of 9/11. KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS Andrew Leads Effort To Preserve Health Care For 9/11 First Responders and Survivors This week, Andrew led a group of Republican cosponsors of the 9/11 Responder and Survivor Health Funding Correction Act, in urging House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone (D-NJ) to bring the legislation up for a full committee mark-up. H.R. 4965 would address a funding shortfall in the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP) and ensure its adequate funding now and in the future. In a letter to the chairman, the Members wrote: "...if Congress does not quickly address this impending crisis, then the men and women who put their lives on the line and who survived the 9/11 terrorist attacks will lose health coverage...Congress has a responsibility to uphold our promises. We implore you not to turn a blind eye to the hardship 9/11 responders and survivors are facing and urge you to move this critical legislation forward without further delay." Andrew Introduces Resolution In Support of Educating the Next Generation on 9/11 This week, ahead of the 21st Anniversary 9/11, Andrew introduced a House Resolution expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that all 50 States should include the events of the September 11th terrorist attacks in their curriculum of elementary and secondary schools. Currently only 14 states require students be taught about 9/11. In a statement, Andrew said, "The events of September 11, 2001 are of such national significance and profound sorrow that we must ensure they never fade from our collective memory." "As the first generation of Americans born after 9/11 are reaching adulthood, it is critical that they are taught about the 2,997 innocents who were murdered on that day, the brave first responders who ran into the fire to save their fellow man, and the implications of the attacks on the national security posture of the United States."
