MIKIE SHERRILL - U.S. CONGRESS [[link removed]]
Friend,
Twenty-one years ago today, our nation and our communities were forever changed. The September 11th terrorist attacks shook our sense of peace and we lost 749 New Jerseyans — our family members, friends, and neighbors. Their memory and impact on our lives will never, ever be forgotten.
In the years since the attack, our towns have come together to mark the solemn anniversary. It is always so moving to be there with so many of you. 9/11 may have shaken us, but it did not break our spirit.
The first responders who ran in to save people and spent months at Ground Zero represent the best America has to offer. We are thankful every day for their bravery and selfless service.
We all know the toll and sacrifice our community experienced as a result of 9/11. That is why I was appalled when I first entered Congress to find that the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund was running out of money. Replenishing it, permanently, was clearly the right thing to do.
Yet, I found harsh pushback from Members of Congress from across the country who did not want to support our first responders. I am proud to say, that alongside a bipartisan group of members and advocates like John Feal and Jon Stewart, Congress passed a law to make sure the Victim Compensation Fund is permanently funded. It is now my mission to ensure the World Trade Center Health Program covers healthcare for victims suffering from uterine cancer as a result of toxic exposure.
Our experience fighting for the Victim Compensation Fund helped pave the way for the Honoring Our PACT Act, which was signed into law this year. This law will help veterans suffering from similar toxic exposure-related illnesses from their service that survivors and first responders suffered after 9/11. I am proud to be able to help more people with this legislation.
I hope you can find peace today, hug your family close, and remember those who were lost so tragically. No one is stronger than us.
God bless you and the United States of America,
Mikie Sherrill
