On a sunny morning in September, 21 years ago, our lives would forever be changed by what would become known as the worst terrorist attack in the history of the United States. Three thousand lives were lost that day, with many more suffering in the following years from illnesses related to the disaster.

That morning also showed the world the fortitude of the American people, where hundreds of first responders went to Ground Zero at their own risk to save lives, and private citizens came together to support their community in whatever way they could.

It has now been 21 years since that day, and the legacy of 9/11 lives on, in more ways than one. Today is traditionally remembered as a day of unity in our country, but it is also the day when corrupt politicians took a tragedy and used it to spread hate and divide our nation with islamophobia.

Today we mourn all those who were lost to the attacks, we honor the brave people who sacrificed their lives for their fellow humans, and we remember the soldiers who gave everything in defense of our country in the aftermath.

We must also recommit ourselves to love for our brothers and sisters, and in remembrance of 9/11, fight for a country where we are truly united.
