John — I've never seen media bias as blatant and dangerous as it is right now, and I wanted to make sure you saw our email describing our plan to fight back, which is pasted below. — Robert Reich
Dear John,
I’m sorry. I’ve absolutely had it with the mainstream media’s coverage of Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans.
Since President Biden’s speech last week about the threat to democracy posed by the MAGA movement, mainstream media outlets from CNN to the New York Times have fallen all over themselves criticizing him for being too harsh and partisan.
What complete nonsense.
Holding Trump accountable for attempting a coup and making off with troves of top-secret documents is not a form of partisanship. Decrying the people who attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6 is not harsh.
These same insurrectionists are now running for the key offices that will oversee the 2024 presidential election. Hello?
It’s obvious that we cannot rely on the media to inform the public about the threat posed to our democracy. So we must go around them. Between now and Election Day, Inequality Media Civic Action is launching a massive effort across all our platforms to warn voters about the danger to our democracy posed by the MAGA movement and Trump’s Big Lie election deniers.
But to overcome and inoculate against the corporate media’s false equivalence narrative, we need to go big, and as a nonprofit organization, we rely on donations from supporters like you.
Will you make a donation to help support Inequality Media Civic Action as we sound the alarm about the threat to American democracy posed by the MAGA Republicans before it’s too late?
For years, the media has bent over backward to provide “balance,” drawing false equivalencies between “right” and “left.” But this is the worst I’ve ever seen.
For example, on Tuesday, New York Times columnist Bret Stephens wrote a column equating Biden with “the predecessor he denounces” and attacking Biden for being insufficiently “charitable” to MAGA Republicans.
I almost spit out my coffee when I read it.
There is no compromise with violent insurrectionists. A failure to call out the Trump Republicans for what they are — liars and enablers — violates the most basic canons of journalistic ethics. “Balanced journalism” does not exist halfway between facts and lies.
We founded Inequality Media Civic Action because it was clear we could no longer count on the mainstream media to inform the public about the challenges we face as a country. Our strategy was to use social media to connect with people directly, using viral videos, easy-to-understand explainers, and proven-effective messaging to debunk Republican lies and inspire people to take action.
Between now and Election Day, we will be using all of our platforms across social media — from YouTube to Instagram to TikTok — to alert voters about what’s at stake in this election.
We cannot allow Republicans who voted against certifying the 2020 presidential election to take control of Congress. We must stop the Big Lie candidates running for secretary of state in key battleground states where they will have the power to certify Donald Trump as the winner in 2024 regardless of what the voters say. And we must encourage voters to vote all the way down the ballot.
With just 61 days left until Election Day, we’re counting on your help to power our work. No donation is too small.
Will you make a donation to help support Inequality Media Civic Action and defend our democracy from the MAGA Republicans?
Thank you for joining us in the fight to save our democracy,
Robert Reich
