Jack, every single day, it feels like there’s breaking news about how Gov. Ron DeSantis has plunged Florida further into extremism.

DeSantis’ crusades against abortion, trans youth, voters, and anyone else not suited to his far right-wing agenda reminds me of how it felt to be bombarded with news of Trump’s latest schemes and injustices every day of his White House occupation. Given that DeSantis is trying to be Trump’s successor with a bid to be the next Republican president, that’s no coincidence.

DeSantis must be stopped, and we can’t wait for 2024. He must be stopped now. DeSantis won the governor’s race in 2018 by only 32,000 votes. He can be defeated in his bid for reelection, but only if grassroots groups on the ground in Florida have the support and funding needed to educate and empower voters.

Increasing voter turnout is key to combating voter suppression in Florida. In 2021, DeSantis signed a bill that specifically targets Black voters and limits access to ballot drop boxes, prevents groups from offering water or snacks to voters waiting in long lines at polling places, and allows for partisan poll watchers.

Navigating intentionally confusing laws is a barrier to the ballot box, which means the difference between eligible voters and eligible voters who are actually able to access their right to vote can be vast. Our partners in Florida are putting in the work each and every day to ensure every voter, and particularly Black, brown, immigrant, and formerly incarcerated voters, know their rights and can cast their ballots.

With just two months remaining until the midterms, your contribution is more important than ever, Jack. No matter where you live, thwarting DeSantis’ rise within the Republican party’s ranks is of the utmost importance. We can’t have another Trump—for Florida or the nation.
